The Friends of the Norman Public Library celebrated National Poetry Month in April by sponsoring the 12th Annual Poetry Contest at the Norman library. An awards reception and celebration held recently recognized local poets, from teens to 90 year olds.

Poems were judged anonymously by a panel of officials from outside the library. The first three places received gift cards to Borders' bookstore and fourth place winners received a book bag filled with books and other goodies.

In the adult category, Perry Glenn Lovett took first place with his poem, "The Wait." Robert Ferrier won second and fourth places with poems Kiamachi River Dam and The Carnival of Poetry respectively. Sheryl J. Glover won third with her poem titled, "First Snow."

In the high school category, Gracie Webb won first place with "Home." Lauren Beltran took second with "Summer Warfare." Jessica Worrell won third with "Evolution." Fourth place went to Alex Zabel for "Furnace, Burn Me Away."

The middle school category included first place winner Emily French for "Mums," Meriam Sami Alrumaizon took second for "A Winters Day." Janis Endicott won third with "Storm." Dalyn Boyd got fourth place for her untitled poem.
