Pioneer Rendezvous scheduled in Blanchard

Irene Fife of Norman, and Lauri Olsen will show their bread making skills at the Pioneer Rendezvous 9 a.m. to noon July 18 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 117 W. Blanchard Drive, Blanchard.

There will be teepees set up with bedding, clothing and Native American artifacts inside. There also will be demonstrations of black powder, archery and hawking (throwing a tomahawk). Neil Keyes, Jim Bishop, gun makers, Roger Amreim and Felipe Sagastizado will answer questions.

Blacksmith Wes Baker of Alex will demonstrate his art and provide free snow cones. Dutch oven cooking by Beth Stone and friends of Yukon, will teach how to cook outside.

The morning will provide information on how the pioneers lived and pioneer games for the children. Nellie, a purebred Haflinger, will turn the crank of the horse-drawn ice cream freezer. All events and treats are provided free of charge.

There will be a live blue grass band, Southbound Mule, to add to the occasion. Indoor demonstrations include Lye Soap Making by Wanda Dismukes of Washington, Rabbits for Food by Jeanie Stephans and Survival Skills By Dorlene Welch of Wanette. Welch grew up without electricity and will cover many aspects of emergency preparedness and survival.

Traveling with Pioneers will be taught by Wendy Humphrey of Noble. Humphrey also will have some pioneer art. Terry Loken of Newcastle will cover Herbs-Medicinal and more. Lisa Lesby and family will have information on goats and broom making.

Alice Brooks will give a quilting demonstration and Shirley Burns of Chickasha will teach knitting. Those who would like to take home a scarf need to bring 4-ply worsted weight yarn and number 8 or 10 needles or for a crocheted scarf, bring 4-ply worsted weight yarn and a G crochet hook. Kathy Stidham of Chickasha will teach crocheting.

Needle Crafts will be covered by Edna Norton, 78, of Newcastle and Edna Wilson, 82, of Noble. Neither can embroider anymore, but both have years of experience with many types of embroidery, needlepoint appliqu? and more.

Norton even owned her own craft store for several years and has expertise in many crafts and art.

Jeanette McKenny from Blanchard will demonstrate tatting.

Sour Dough Making will be taught by Ronda Lukinbill, gardening by Wes Lee, McClain County Extension Agent. Grady County Extension agent Susan Routh will have preparedness literature and information on canning. Propagating/stem cutting will be taught by Master Gardener Robert Grass.
