The coming year's version of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure's "Men of Oklahoma" calendar has taken on an added significance for the women involved in making it a reality.
The first calendar, put out six years ago, was put together by twin sister Cris Shutt and Linda Crooks and her husband Steve. They were inspired by the bravery of their friend Sheryl Auringer in her battle with breast cancer.
Auringer died this past January, and the 2010 edition of the calendar bas been dedicated to her memory.
"The calendar reminds me so much of how our organization was started, a promise made between two sisters," said Lorna Palmer, executive director for the Central Oklahoma Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
"Each year, friends get together and make a promise to one another to make a difference in this fight."
The calendar project has been responsible for almost $55,000 in donations since its inception. With local corporate sponsorship covering all production costs, 100 percent of the calendar sales benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
Norman photographer Shevaun Williams again has donated the photographs for the calendar.
The kickoff party for the calendar will take place 7 p.m. Tuesday at The Hall at Old Town Plaza, 102 W. Eufaula St. The event will be catered by the Hal Smith Restuarant Group and includes a silent and live auction, autograph session and sales of T-shirts and calendars.
Featured in this year's calendar are Danny Williams; Dennis, Austin and Dillon Auringer; Andy, Terry, Sydney and Anna Carman Paden; Scott and Blake Shutt; Randy and Brad Taylor; Mitchell and Caiden Maurer; Mingo, Craig, Kevin and Scott Maturey; Johnathan Kayne; Brian Blakley, Tim Hare and Clay Belk; Steve and Tinker Owens; Chris and Brech Peters and Brandon Purvis; Brownie Scout Troop 232 and Josh, Dawn and Hannah Heupel.
Calendars are $10 each and are avalable at the kickoff party and after at Shevaun Williams -- Associates, 221 E. Main St., Copelin's Office Center, 425 W. Main St., Cookie 'N Cards, 754 Asp Ave., Studio 110, 110 Thompson Drive and Norman Regional Breast Cancer Center, 901 N. Porter Ave.
Two other fund raisers have been planned. Applebee's, 500 Ed Noble Parkway, will host a benefit pancake breakfast 7 to 10:30 a.m. Sunday. And Norman's CiCi's Pizza, 540 W. Main St., will donate 10 percent of its sales from 5 to 9 p.m. each Thursday in October.
