The competitive acting and debate squad won second in sweepstakes and notched nine regional qualifications at Putnam City North Nov. 21-22 despite having a skeleton crew due to the consecutive running of "Seussical!" Jacob Tsotigh and Jason Byas won third place in Policy Debate.
Six students broke to the octo-final round in qualifying LD debate, including Victoria Busby and Andres Kenney. Four advanced to quarterfinals, including Ella Rhodes and Tiemo Landes. Emma Hunsaker reached semifinals and Julie Halterman reached finals. Rhodes qualified at fifth place, Hunsaker at fourth and Halterman at second place.
Four novice LD debaters reached octo-finals as well, including Emily Aiken, Angela Gutierrez and Michael Agnew. Ninth-grader Lauren Saxon breezed through Octos, quarters and semis to debate in the final round and receive second place.
Mariana Colin placed third in standard oratory.
Sarah Lobban placed third in dramatic interpretation.
Four speakers reached semifinals in United States extemp: Tsotigh, Tiemo Landes, Yichen Wu and Andrew Blunck.
NHS had 100 percent of its international extemp speakers break to semifinals, including Julie Halterman and Ella Rhodes. Three went on to finals, including Zhou Fang and Emma. Teammate Kyle Mellon placed first in finals.
Senior Toby Parkison made it to semifinals in poetry interpretation, while teammate Philip Parrish reached finals and placed second. Parrish also placed fourth in monologue.

Jefferson
Susan Wright, media specialist, was selected as Jefferson Elementary's Teacher of the Year. Second, congratulations to Jane McGill for becoming a nationally board certified teacher.
Thursday will be Jefferson night at Goldies. A portion of the proceeds that night go to support Jefferson PTA.
Friday, fourth-graders will go to the Fred Jones Art Museum as part of its Partners in Art project.
Kennedy
Ms. Cooper's second grade class has opened a class mercantile. Students have been keeping track of their money and making change when needed. Students also are fined by their peers when needed. Each week students will get a chance to shop at the classroom mercantile for items from small stickers to lunch with the teachers.
Fifth-graders finished their colonial America unit with a reenactment of the first feast among the Wampagnoag Indians and Pilgrims.
First-graders celebrated Thanksgiving with a sharing feast or making peanut butter turkeys, wearing turkey hats they had made in class. Ms. Brinker's and Ms. Jackson's classes made leaf wreaths and turkey decorations made from toilet paper rolls.
Family Fun Night/ Holiday Art will be 6-7 p.m. Tuesday. Grade levels are responsible for creating a product that families can make and take home.
