NORMAN — Local, a Norman restaurant specializing in farm to fork dining, is adding children’s classes to the menu.

The restaurant is launching a class schedule to give children ownership and excitement about food, nutrition, math, science and world culture.

The classes are designed to inspire interest in personal nutrition and health while expanding student knowledge of the history and culture of local and worldwide food. Classes are at 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. Tuesday through Friday for toddler and pre-school children and 3:30 to 4:20 p.m. for elementary students.

“Offering classes in Localville has been part of our long-range plan for the space since before we opened,” said owner Abby Clark, a former Norman Public School elementary teacher. “Parents are actively seeking enrichment opportunities for their children.”

Morning toddler and pre-school classes are hands-on art, culture and music sessions focused around food.

“For example, one week we are doing tie-dye with beets,” Clark said. “We’ll create some messy, fun art projects, sing songs and explore the ’60s flower children movement.”

Afternoon classes for school-aged children bring a bit more brain heft to the table. Cordon Bleu trained Executive Chef Kyle Mills will lead the class.

Parents or guardians stay onsite at Local during class and can enjoy the complimentary snack station and WiFi.

Classes are $15 each, or $60 a month, with sibling and multi-class discounts available. Infant care is available for $5 during class.

Students will end each session with custom aprons, recipes and recipe boxes and/or art show, depending on the class.

Enrollment is now open, with no enrollment fee, and class sizes are limited. Classes begin Sept. 3.
