NORMAN — For Gregg Standridge, instructor at Norman Music Institute, music inspires many things, including a passion for community.

It is this inspiration that has moved the Norman Music Institute instructors to host an event combining music and giving back to the community benefiting Food and Shelter, Norman’s soup kitchen and homeless services agency.

The instructors will perform a benefit show featuring the classic R.E.M. album “Fables of the Reconstruction,” with special guest Rewind at 7 p.m. Friday.

A suggested cash donation of $5 will go directly to services provided by Food and Shelter, a United Way partner agency.

“I have always wanted to play this album live from start to finish. Many of the fine musicians I work with — including Dean Brown, Tim Gregory, Ben Carter, Danielle Tipton, Ryan Jones and Robert Bartlett — have put a tremendous effort into helping me make this possible,” Standridge said. “Our hope is to bring the community in to visit the Norman Music Institute and also learn a little more about the needs of the hungry and homeless in Norman.”

In addition to the funds raised through admission, NMI will auction off a Walden Guitar and two Kala Ukuleles to benefit Food and Shelter.

For April Doshier, director of Food and Shelter, events like these are priceless.

“The opportunity to feature Food and Shelter in a venue like this helps us reach people who might not already know the great work of our amazing staff and volunteers. It will be a fun event, and I hope many Norman residents will come experience this unique opportunity to support our residents and guests,” Doshier said.

The Norman Music Institute is at 2795B Broce Drive. NMI offers vocal and instrumental lessons for beginning and advanced learners.
