NORMAN — Doug Warden, a resident of Shawnee, will be available to sign copies of his book, “Boy Sergeant,” from 1 to 3 p.m. March 1 at Hastings Books, 2300 W. Main St. in Norman.
A college dropout who was drafted to serve his country, Warden was barely 20 when he arrived in Vietnam in 1967 as a private first class.
He was first a rifleman, then a few days later, a radio telephone operator for his platoon leader and then for his company commander. He became a squad leader, platoon sergeant and platoon leader in a remarkable short period of time.
He was awarded two Silver Stars for gallantry in action, the Bronze Star for Heroism, the Soldier’s Medal, the Air Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, three Purple Hearts, the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry and the Valorous Unit Award for his service in Vietnam. In addition, he earned the Combat Infantry Badge and the Parachutist Badge.
In other events, from 10 a.m. to noon March 1 at Gymboree Play & Music, 255 34th Ave. SW in Norman, author Mary E. Hendrix will sign copies of her book, “What Makes a Boy Strong? What Makes a Girl Pretty?”
