The Norman Transcript
NORMAN — The volunteer of the week is Air Force Veteran Bobby Washington who has been with us for several years. Bobby has helped many veterans to receive the VA benefits that they were promised when they went into the military. He is married to Constance who supports his mission to help our countries veterans.
There were 115 veteran’s surviving spouses who made the trip to Goldsby for assistance with their VA claims and questions. There were 18 veterans who filed their first claim for benefits. Of this number, there were seven widows who applied for DIC or pension benefits based on their husband’s military service. There were 10 veterans who were recently received a 100 percent rating and 15 who received 10 percent to 70 percent for their service connected disabilities from the Veterans Administration for their disabilities that were caused by or aggravated by military service.
The benevolence fund was used to assist widows and veterans with food and other types of needed household items last week. Sid Smith provided food boxes for six veterans and their families who are in need. If you need this type of assistance, stop by Thursday morning or call Sid at 573-1990.
Clayton Lee, 684-8860, and our other transportation drivers, provided rides to seven veterans to the Oklahoma City VA Hospital for their appointments. If you need a ride or know a veteran who does, call Clayton to set up a driver. For the Norman area, veterans can call Harold Martin at 227-3239 or Robert Root at 919-3008. For Moore area needs, call Howard Robertson at 205-4895.
The book “100 stories from Veterans Corner,” by Dr. Kami Day continues to be one of the proudest achievements for all of our volunteers who make the trip to Goldsby each week. Harold and his helpers have sold more than 115 copies at our location.
If you would like to help us to help fellow veterans and their widows, we are a 501(c)(3) non-profit. Jerry Baxter is the treasurer and can be reached at 833-0773.
If you have questions on surviving spouse benefits, call Shirley at 361-9322.
I would like to say thanks to the many friends who have called or stopped by to see me during my illness. I hope to be back on the job next Thursday.
