Volunteers assist 90 with claims

NORMAN — The volunteer of the week, David McFeerrin, has been making the trip to Goldsby for the last five years. Each week, he does his part to assist veterans and their dependents in receiving all of the VA benefits they are eligible for.

McFeerrin served in the Army, achieving the rank of major before retiring. David also volunteers each Wednesday morning, assisting veterans at the American Legion Post 88 in Norman.

Please remember that we will be closed Dec. 26 for volunteers to be with their families. We will be open the following Thursday morning at the regular time. I hope that each of you has a merry Christmas and a happy new year. All of us at Veterans Corner wish the very best for you and your families.

Last Thursday, we began tracking the number of volunteers who are at Goldsby each week and the jobs they perform. I was pleasantly surprised to see that we had 67 volunteers here to help the men and women who needed assistance with their VA claims and questions.

The total number of volunteers includes many behind-the-scenes men and women who keep the organization running smoothly. If you or your group would like to become involved in what we do, stop by for a visit any Thursday morning.

For those of you who have veterans or surviving spouses in your organization or church who may be eligible for VA benefits, we have a PowerPoint presentation we can present that describes many of the VA benefits that may be available to them.

For the record, everything we do is free. We are veterans helping veterans, with our only goal being to help the men and women who have served our nation in the military.

Ninety veterans and surviving spouses were assisted with their VA claims and questions last Thursday. Of that number, Shirley and her ladies assisted 15 of them in applying for DIC or pension benefits.
