Veterans Corner to reopen in January for VA claim processing

The Norman Transcript

NORMAN — We are wishing everyone a merry Christmas this week from Veterans Corner. We will be closed Thursday so volunteers can spend time with their families, but will be here ready to serve you at 7 a.m. Jan. 2.

The benevolence fund is a part of Veterans Corner that is used primarily to assist veterans with needed medical testing, financial needs, food items and transportation to the VA for their medical appointments. Jerry Baxter is the treasurer for this fund. He also is the go to guy when someone needs assistance. Veterans Corner accepts any kind of automobile, motorcycles and handicap items that can be used or sold to raise funds. Jerry can be reached at 833-0773 most anytime or stop in on Thursday mornings to visit with him.

We have a veteran from Maysville who would like to donate a wheelchair lift that fits on top of a van or car. If you know of someone who could use this, call me at 550-8806.

John Carter of Norman is heading up the building committee plans for a veteran’s facility on property just west of I-35 on Highway 9. If you would like to visit with John about this project, he can be reached at 202-1999. We have a drawing that is available for viewing each Thursday morning at the Goldsby Community Center. While we are talking about Goldsby I recommend that everyone who enjoys a good Christmas Light show to visit the community park.

The Goldsby Veterans Memorial is filled with bricks with veterans names along the Walk of Honor. If you would like to purchase a brick for the veteran in your life, stop by on Thursday to get one in the works. Harold Harvell, JD Kinard and Riley Phillips are available each Thursday to assist you with the purchase of your brick, military hat or a “One Hundred Stories from Veterans Corner” book written by Dr. Kami Day. Harold can be reached at 596-8755 anytime or at Goldsby on Thursday mornings.

For those who need food items Sid Smith has food boxes prepared each Thursday. Sid has been doing this job since we started the benevolence fund and we do appreciate his knowledge and ability to provide this service to Veterans Corner.

We have three vans that are used to transport veterans to their VA appointments. One of these is equipped with a wheelchair lift. Clayton Lee of Dibble can be reached at 684-8860. Howard Martin of Norman drives the wheelchair accessible van and can be reached at 227-3239.

For all of your questions and assistance about veteran’s benefits, we are located at the Goldsby Community Center each Thursday. The doors open at 7 a.m. and sign in sheets are available at 5:30 a.m. Please be there early for us to help you with your claim. We do our best to process each one in a timely manner but be prepared to stay awhile and please be patient. Visit

For questions on widow’s benefits, call Shirley at 361-9322. You also may send donations to Veterans Corner, P.O. Box 704, Washington, OK 73093. You can email me at
