Volunteers offer free tax filing help

NORMAN — Community volunteers working in the Norman AARP Tax-Aide Program will provide free tax service in preparing federal and state income tax forms at the Norman Public Library, 225 N. Webster Ave., and the Norman Senior Citizens Center, 329 S. Peters Ave.

The Norman Public Library AARP site will be in the Computer Room from 5 to 8 p.m. on 10 Monday evenings through April 14.

Trained volunteers who have been certified as tax counselors will provide free service to taxpayers on a first come, first served basis.

Taxpayers may have their federal and state returns prepared manually or by free electronic filing.

Tax counselors also will be available to answer taxpayers’ questions.

The other free tax preparation site will operate downstairs at the Senior Citizens Center from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. each Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday through April 10.

At this AARP site, tax filing will be by computer for both federal and state tax returns of moderate complexity for taxpayers age 55 or older with low and middle incomes.

Service will be by appointment only.

Returns cannot be prepared that involve income from rental real estate, ministerial income, mortgage certificate credits, business income that does not qualify for use of a CEZ form, farm income and other income or credit items that are beyond the scope of training.

Call the Norman Senior Citizens Center at 329-4200 for an appointment.

Taxpayers should bring with them a copy of their 2013 federal and state tax returns along with their W-2 and 1099 forms and other income and expense information.

Taxpayers with special needs are welcome at both sites.
