Norman Galaxy of Writers’ annual contest winners announced

NORMAN — Norman Galaxy of Writers’ yearly contest comprises six categories. In addition, the Bonnie Speer Crème de la Crème award is given to the best overall entry.

Contest chairwoman Ruth Castillo presented the awards at the Jan. 12 meeting.

Bonnie Speer Crème De La Crème Award — “Harold’s Helper,” a poem by Shelley Anne Richter.

Short Story — first place: “A Good Hand,” by Katherine West; second place: “The Night Visitor,” by Sherry Bynum; third place, “Short Cuts,” by Linda Basinger.

Nonfiction Article — first place: “Saddle Dwellers,” by Shelley Anne Richter; second place: “My Deadly Sin,” by Lisbeth L. McCarty; third place: “The Single Action Shooting Society’s Spirit of the Game,” by Kathleen Park.

Nostalgic Essay — first place: “Colonel Bourland Commands Attention,” by Barbara Shepherd; second place: “Pals in the Golden West,” by Keith A. Eaton; third place: “A Hickory-Smoked, Lemonade Summer,” by Sylvia Forbes; honorable mention: “Grandma and the Swimming Hole,” by Ann Champeau.

Children’s Fiction (for readers 8–12 years old) — first place has two winners: “Money for a Mitt,” by Ann Champeau, and “In Old Sweden One Summer,” by Katherine West; second place: “Ruby Wears Red,” by Barbara Shepherd; third place: “Self-Defense,” by Neal Huffaker.

Rhymed Poetry — first place: “I Thought I’d Feel Older,” by Lisbeth L. McCarty; second place: “My Golden Years,” by Ann Champeau; third place: “Reformed,” by Katherine West.

Unrhymed Poetry — first place: “Harold’s Helper,” by Shelley Anne Richter; second place: “Autumn Light,” by Ruth Loeffler; third place: “She Wears a Dress of Sticks,” by Katherine West; honorable mention: “Letter from a Young Patriot,” by Barbara Shepherd.

The new Norman Galaxy of Writers officers for 2013 are Tom Barczak, president; Betty Robbins, pres.-elect; Susan Cogan, VP-programs; Mary Payne, secretary; and Linda Basinger, treasurer.
