Bishop to visit Norman church

NORMAN — The United Church of Norman — UCC will present the Rev. Dr. Yvette Flunder at 7 p.m. Wednesday at St. Stephens United Methodist Church, 1801 W. Brooks St.

The title of the free lecture is “My Mama’s Kitchen ... A Theology of Relentless Hospitality.”

Flunder is a preacher, educator, conference speaker and singer. She is the founder of City of Refuge UCC in San Francisco, which unites gospel ministry with social ministry.

A native San Franciscan, Flunder is an ordained minister of the United Church of Christ. She received a doctor of ministry from San Francisco Theological Seminary.

Flunder is presiding bishop of a multi-denominational fellowship of 110 primarily African American Christian leaders and laity.

She is a trustee and adjunct professor at Pacific School of Religion, Berkeley, Calif. Flunder is recognized for her work in the HIV/AIDS epidemic. She is the author of “Where the Edge Gathers: A Theology and Homiletic of Radical Inclusion.”
