NORMAN — Kennedy Elementary School

Second-graders participated in a Mock Caldecott Unit where they evaluated picture books that were published in 2012. Each class read 12 different titles and the winner of the picture books was “Baby Bear Sees Blue,” by Ashley Wolff. The culminating aspect of the unit was a virtual meeting with Hillsdale Elementary School in West Chester, Pa. Kennedy and Hillsdale students were able to ask and answer questions about the books they evaluated as part of the Mock Caldecott Unit. On Jan. 28, the American Library Association announced the winner and honor recipients of the Caldecott Medal during a live webcast and students were able to see what books were selected.

Lucien Rhodes, in Ms. Wrany’s first grade, is on his 15th page of his number scroll and is working toward writing his numbers in the 1,600s now.

Kindergartners celebrated the 100th Day of School with a visit from Zero the Hero. Zero led them in 100 exercises and brought them a 100-shaped treat.

First-graders also celebrated the 100th Day of School. They did 100 activities throughout the day, well, almost. They wrote about what they would do if they were turning 100 years old and what they would do with $100 along with math activities.
