The Norman Transcript
NORMAN — This week, we are recognizing Pastor Franklin Thompson as the volunteer of the week.
Thompson has been with us for the last six years, always ready to assist any veteran to navigate the numerous forms required when applying for VA benefits. Thompson and his wife, Mary, make their home in Oklahoma City.
Nov. 2, I represented Veterans Corner as the grand marshall of the Blanchard Veterans Day parade. Thanks go out to Roy Sampley, Sam Broyles and the many other VFW members and other volunteers who helped make the Blanchard Veterans Day parade a huge success.
The Knights of Columbus chapter in Norman invited several of us from Veterans Corner to join their group for dinner Oct. 30. We presented a short program about veterans’ benefits and surviving spouse benefits that may be available to some of the members and their families.
We presented an informational briefing using the PowerPoint presentation to 60 of the Boeing Global Services employees at Tinker Air Force Base last week.
The arrangements for this program were made by one of the veterans who we recently assisted at Goldsby, Fred B. Brown II, Ph.D. Many of the men and women who are employed by Boeing are veterans who have been transferred to Tinker from other facilities.
For those of you who will be in the Midwest City area Tuesday, we will be available to visit with veterans about possible VA benefits at the annual Veterans Day luncheon celebration at Rose State College. Please look for our table. The guest speaker will be the vice commander of the 72nd Air Base Wing of Tinker Air Force Base.
At 10 a.m. Monday, some of the Veterans Corner volunteers will be at the Rambling Oaks facility in Norman to recognize veterans who live there.
All of the handicapped ramps we had have been given to needy veterans or to churches. We have two hospital beds available, if anyone can use them. I also have several walkers and other items that are available to any veteran or spouse who could use them. Call me if you know someone who could use them.
On Thursday, volunteers assisted 112 veterans and surviving spouses with VA claims and questions. Of that number, six received a disability rating of 100 percent for their disabilities that were caused by or aggravated by military service.
Twenty veterans filed their first claims for VA benefits.
Shirley and her crew of lady volunteers continue to assist from 10 to 20 surviving spouses each week. Many of the ladies who make the trip to see our volunteers will be eligible for DIC or pension benefits. Shirley can be reached at 361-9322.
If you need assistance from the benevolence fund, call Jerry Baxter at 833-0773 or visit him on Thursday mornings.
I will volunteer with the DAV Chapter 61 on Sunday in Norman at Golden Corral from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The DAV is looking for drivers to use their van to transport disabled veterans to their Oklahoma City VA appointments. If you are interested in volunteering as a driver, call Eric Anderson at 456-1540 or Dalmar Ives at 412-0694.
For those who need food items, Sid Smith has food boxes prepared each Thursday for anyone who needs this assistance.
We have three transportation vans that are used to transport veterans to their VA appointments. Clayton Lee, of Dibble, can be reached at 684-8860. Howard Martin, of Norman, drives the wheelchair-accessible van and can be reached at 227-3239. Robert Root, of Norman, can be reached at 919-3008.
For all of your questions and assistance about veterans’ benefits, we are at the Goldsby Community Center each Thursday. The doors open at 7 a.m., and sign-in sheets are available at 5:30 a.m.
You may send donations to Veterans Corner, P.O. Box 704, Washington, OK, 73093.
