90-year-old golfer lands 2nd hole-in-one

PELHAM, N.H. — Most golfers play a lifetime without striking the ultimate hole-in-one. Bucky Boehm isn’t one of them. He recently hit the second ace of his recreational golfing career.

But then Boehm is 90 years old, and still playing a mean game of golf. The one-time professional baseball player carded his latest hole-in-one on the 125-yard 9th hole at Pine Valley Golf Links here.

It was witnessed by his golfing partner, Bill Tarmey, 72, who couldn’t believe Boehm’s tee-shot landed in the cup.

Boehm took it in stride. He’d struck a hole-in-one in 1985 while playing in a local golf league, and has been playing golf for 57 years.

Boehm and Tarmey said they lost sight of the hole-in-one ball when it took flight. As they approached the ninth hole, they couldn’t find it. Tarmey suggested Boehm look in the sand trap alongside the green.

It wasn’t there, and so Boehm decided to look in the cup.

“I saw the ball in the bottom, and I said, ‘Hey, Billy, it’s in the hole. You come and look before I take it out.’”

Boehm grew up in Methuen, Mass., and was the first person inducted into the town’s athletic hall of fame. He played professional baseball from 1946 to 1951, reaching as high as the Triple-A San Diego Padres of the Pacific Coast League, but never made it to the Major League.

“Hitting kept me out of the big leagues,” said Boehm, a trait that didn’t hamper his amateur golf game.
