Tough year is a reminder of all the things to be thankful for

The Norman Transcript

NORMAN — I was reminded by a dear father figure in my life the other day that although things this year didn’t really go the way we had expected, we still have a lot to be thankful for.

I didn’t realize it until that point that this wise man was right. This year has been particularly long and rough on my family. We’ve dealt with disappointments, illnesses and heartbreak. Although still a bit shell shocked from what this year has thrown at me, I am thankful for a lot of things.

Every evening, I have the privilege to come home to a house that has food, all the utilities I need to have a healthy, comfortable lifestyle. I’m greeted by two happy, beautiful dogs that just think I hung the moon. As long as I keep the treats flowing, that is.

I’ve got the everlasting love of my family. I’ve always known I’ve had a great family, but this year they really showered me with so much love and encouragement it’s almost embarrassing to think about. I know I don’t deserve all of them in my life, but I’m so thankful that I’ve got them.

I’ve got a job that also has blessed me with so many wonderful opportunities. The people I work with are a second family to me and some of the people I’ve met along my journalism path have become dear friends. I always like going on an interview for a story and walking away with a new friend.

I’m thankful that for the most part, I’ve got my health. How easy is it for us to take for granted our health until we don’t have it?

Of course I’d be remiss if I didn’t say I was thankful for the loving support of my husband Shawn. He’s been through the same awful year with me and has become my steady, faithful rock. I know I wouldn’t have gotten this far without his ability to see the good things in life. The ability to keep his faith and carry on.

It’s easy to think about what we don’t have. I’ve been a victim of that myself. But this Thanksgiving as I baste the turkey and put marshmallows on the sweet potatoes, I’ll remember all the many blessings I’ve been given this year and try to forget the rest.
