NORMAN — On Saturday, more than 200 runners and walkers are expected to participate in the fourth annual Run for the Next Generation 5K and Kids Fun Run hosted by Hitachi Computer Products Inc. of Norman.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the Center for Children and Families.

“Children and the families they grow up in are the roots of our community,” event director Tommy Fazendin said. “The theme Run for the Next Generation urges the community to invest in our kids, especially those who are facing adversity in their lives, because their well-being affects us all and determines our future as a whole.”

Fazendin works with the Hitachi Community Action Committee, a subgroup of The Hitachi Foundation that seeks to “respond to local community needs and challenges,” according to the organization’s website.

The committee selected the Center for Children and Families as the beneficiary of the race because it provides services to children and families facing difficult situations, such as child abuse and neglect, divorce, separation and poverty.

“CCFI is grateful for the support of Hitachi through this event,” said Katie Fitzgerald, executive director of CCFI. “This partnership not only allows CCFI to continue the important work we do with the vulnerable children we work with but gives community members of all ages the opportunity to embrace our mission to give every child a chance to grow up safe, nurtured and loved.”

The race will be at Hitachi Computer Products, 1800 E. Imhoff Road. The 5K registration is $25 and includes T-shirts for the first 150 entrants. Registration will begin at 7 a.m., with the 5K starting at 8 a.m. This year’s event features a new Kids Fun Run, which will begin at 9 a.m., to enable runners ages 5-12 to participate with their family members at no additional cost.
