NORMAN — The volunteer of the week is a 20-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force. Col. Wilson Guilbeaux resides in Oklahoma City with his wife, Lillia. He has been with us for the past six years.
One hundred and twenty-eight veterans and surviving spouses made the trip to Goldsby last Thursday for assistance with VA claims. Five veterans received VA ratings of 100 percent for their disabilities.
Nineteen veterans were assisted in filing their first claims for VA benefits. Many of these new claims may take a year to be finalized.
Shirley and her helpers assisted 13 surviving spouses with their claims. I would like to find a couple of more ladies who would like to be a part of Shirley’s crew. We also are always looking for more volunteers to work with our veterans who need assistance. If this appeals to you, stop by any Thursday morning around 7 to start your training.
Sixteen veterans received ratings from 10 percent to 90 percent for their disabilities.
I continue to receive calls requesting information about benefits that the atomic veterans or their survivors may be entitled to receive from the Justice Department or from the Veterans Administration. If a veteran was involved with or assigned at a location where atomic testing was done and developed cancer, benefits may be payable.
Veterans Corner received a community service award presented by the Oklahoma Chapters of the Daughters of the American Revolution at their state meeting at Norman’s Embassy Suites Hotel.
I spoke with John Carter about our building plans and funding efforts for the proposed Veterans Corner facility to be built. He said everything is waiting for a commitment on the location.
Last week, I received a call from a veteran returning from Afghanistan who said some places were charging to fill out VA paperwork. It is illegal for anyone to charge to help you file for VA disability. If anyone tries to charge for services, turn them into the Department of Veterans Affairs.
We are at the Goldsby Community Center each Thursday. Doors open at 7 a.m., and sign-in sheets are available at 5:30 a.m.Be there early for us to help you with your claim. Take time to visit our web address, www.veteranscorner.org.
