NORMAN — The volunteer of the week, Robert Bovee, was transferred out of state by his employer last year. Yet, he continues to be an important part of Veterans Corner as webmaster. To date, more than 4,800 users have visited veteranscorner.org.
We will be closed Dec. 26 to allow volunteers to be with their families during Christmas.
I continue to receive reports that other organizations are telling veterans and surviving spouses that we charge for services. We do not, nor will we ever, charge anyone for assisting them at Veterans Corner.
It appears to me that some are angry about the success that our volunteers have when assisting veterans. I think that all organizations should have one goal, and that is to help every veteran and surviving spouse receive all of the VA benefits they are entitled to.
With all of the snow and ice last week, only 51 veterans and surviving spouses braved the cold to make the trip to Goldsby. Of that number, two veterans received a VA disability rating of 100 percent for service-connected disabilities.
Only seven veterans made the trip to Goldsby to file their first claims for VA benefits. We used the new Fully Developed Claims forms to file their claims.
With this new system that the VA developed, the processing time for VA to make a decision should be significantly shorter. For those of you who have Internet access, consider setting up an e-benefits premium account before making the trip to Goldsby.
Shirley and her ladies assisted five surviving spouses last Thursday. Each week, I receive calls and emails from some surviving spouses who want to say thanks to Shirley and her crew for helping them receive benefits.
We have been contacting more Oklahoma newspapers asking them to print the Veterans Corner article. If you have access to any newspaper editors, tell them about what we do for veterans and surviving spouses.
