NORMAN — We are recognizing one of the ladies from Norman this week as the volunteer of the week. Mary Lynne Simer is the surviving spouse of an Air Force veteran. She has been working with us for more than two years in the accounting department. Mary also is responsible for keeping a record of donations that we receive and doing the thank you notes that are sent to those who support the veterans.
Last Thursday, 140 veterans and surviving spouses requested assistance. Of this number, 12 were widows who were applying for DIC or Pension benefits based on their husband’s military service. Shirley and her crew of ladies continue to help most of the surviving spouses they work with receive benefits. If you need to talk to Shirley, feel free to call her at 361-9322 or call me at 550-8806.
There were seven veterans who received a rating of one 100 percent for their disabilities that occurred while in the military. The most common disability that many of them receive funds for from the VA is service connection of hearing loss and tinnitus.
We were able to help 26 veterans file their first claims for VA benefits. These ranged from men who served in WWII to the present conflict in Afghanistan. Sixteen veterans received ratings from 10 to 80 percent for their disabilities that were approved by the VA Regional Office in Muskogee.
Clayton Lee, 684-8860, and the other transportation drivers provided rides to seven veterans to the Oklahoma City VA Hospital for their appointments. Norman area veterans can call Harold Martin at 227-3239 or Robert Root at 919-3008. For the Moore area, call Howard Robertson at 205-4895.
We are in need of a large wheelchair for one of the veterans if you or someone you know has one to donate.
For all of your questions and assistance about veterans’ benefits, we are located at the Goldsby Community Center each Thursday. The doors open at 8 a.m.
Take time to visit www.veteranscorner.org. You may also send donations to Veterans Corner, P.O. Box 704, Washington, OK 73093.
Dale K. Graham is service officer for VFW Post 4890.
