NORMAN — Leslie Kelly-Houston was recently named Military Spouse of the Year for Tinker Air Force Base.

The Military Spouse of the Year award recognizes military spouses’ contributions and commitment to the military community.

Five years ago, Kelly-Houston and her husband, Chauncey, in an effort to ensure a stable environment for their sons, one of which has a disability, they decided to split their family. In 2008, Chauncey was reassigned to Tinker AFB with hopes of being reunited with his family in two years while Leslie remained with the family in Virginia. Three years after Chauncey was reassigned, the home the family was leasing in Virginia was foreclosed upon and sold at auction. For the next eight months, she lived in a hotel room with her son and the dog.

In addition to a masters degree from George Mason University, Leslie also has a masters degree from the University of Oklahoma. After a 15 year journalism career, she decided to become a special education teacher. Currently, she is working in a Title 1 school.
