NORMAN — Kaylee Young, a member of the Cleveland Clovers 4-H Club in Norman, was selected as state runner-up in the Prudential Spirit of Community Award.

The Prudential Spirit of Community Award program is the United States’ largest youth recognition program based solely on volunteerism and community service. Since the program was created in 1995, Prudential and its partners have set out to honor middle and high school students for their service at the local, state and national levels.

Every year, of the thousands of applicants, only six youth are honored from each state.

Young started her service project, the HUGS project, in 2010 after attending a district 4-H conference where delegates went to the HUGS project and helped pack care packages to be sent overseas to servicemen and women. She has promoted the HUGS project by speaking to local organizations and community groups, setting up donation drives and recruiting volunteers.

Overall, Young has collected nearly $11,000 and 60,000 items that have gone toward sending care packages to our servicemen and women.
