NORMAN — Emergency planning committee meeting set

The Cleveland County Local Emergency Planning Committee will meet at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday at the new City of Moore Emergency Operations Center, 109 E. Main St.

The committee is composed of volunteers from government, business and emergency response organizations from throughout Cleveland County, although membership is open to anyone who lives or works in the county. The meeting is open to the public.

The LEPC is a planning group designated by federal law to develop and review plans for responding to chemical release emergencies that may occur within the county. The scope of the LEPC has been expanded in recent years to include planning for health crisis, severe weather and other events requiring emergency response efforts.

To make the best possible planning decisions for responding to chemical release emergencies, emergency responders need to know what hazardous chemicals are present in the community.

Businesses that use or handle hazardous chemicals above certain threshold quantities are required by the Community Right-to-Know laws to notify the LEPC of the presence of hazardous chemicals by filing a TIER II report each year. The TIER II reporting deadline is March 1 of each year.

Businesses that have not filed their report for the latest reporting period may still do so. More information on TIER II reporting requirements can be obtained by attending the LEPC quarterly meeting or contacting the LEPC.
