NORMAN — Polls open at 7 this morning and will run until 7 tonight for the city election, which includes city council candidates from wards 2, 4 and 6 as well as a ballot proposition on renewing the Public Safety Sales Tax.

When the polls close, The Transcript will report the vote count as the precincts are turned in at

Ward 2 candidates are Gary Caissie, Aleisha Karjala, Matthew Leal and Clint Williams. Ward 4 candidates are Bill Hickman, Rhett Michael Jones and Greg Jungman. Ward 6 candidates are Jim Griffith and Jerry Lang.

Jungman and Griffith are incumbents. Ward 2 is an open seat. Current council member Tom Kovach did not run for re-election.

The PSST II proposition is a renewal of the half-percent public safety tax originally approved by voters in 2008. If renewed, the sales tax will become permanent. The tax will remain dedicated to public safety needs.

State law requires voters to prove identity before voting. Voters without ID may cast a provisional ballot. Provisional ballots are counted after election day if the voter’s information can be verified by the county election board.
