NORMAN — Sheriff Joe Lester presented the Guardian award Tuesday to a citizen who helped deputies with search and rescue efforts following the EF-5 tornado that struck Moore on May 20.
Lester and deputies surprised Joe Kinslow with the recognition when he arrived to work at Boomer Environmental in Oklahoma City.
“I am highly honored,” Kinslow said after receiving the plaque. “It’s a shock.”
In the aftermath of the May storm, Kinslow offered his services to deputies. He assisted with search and rescue at Moore Medical Center, Plaza Towers Elementary School and private residences.
Kinslow said he was thankful for the deputies at the scene.
“They had open arms for whoever stepped up to help out,” Kinslow said.
Lester said he and his deputies wanted to recognize Kinslow for the bravery he showed on May 20. Kinslow didn’t hesitate to put himself in harm’s way to help victims affected by the tornado.
“I am grateful for Joe Kinslow and everything he did to help these deputies back in May,” Lester said. “He offered to do whatever possible in hazardous conditions and his efforts were invaluable.”
