Commissioners plan for festivities

NORMAN — Cleveland County Commissioners approved two road closures during April at the weekly board meeting Monday.

James Garner Avenue between Main Street and Eufala will close for the Norman Lions Club’s annual carnival April 22-28. The carnival coincides with 89er Day and the Norman Music Festival.

Commissioners also approved street closures for April 25-28 for the Norman Music Festival. Festival Chair Steven White said 55,00 people attended the three-day festival last year. This year, organizers are expecting around 75,000 people.

Commissioners also discussed possible delays to south parking lot improvements. County Commission Chair Rod Cleveland said there was some misunderstanding with the city of Norman regarding the construction plans for the parking lot.

“They are holding up our construction permit,” Cleveland said, adding that he plans to call Norman Development Coordinator Terry Floyd, who works with businesses regarding permit and development issues.

Undersheriff Rhett Burnett reported that 401 prisoners are at the F. DeWayne Beggs Detention Center this week. Of those, 109 are Department of Corrections prisoners, with 106 already having received judgment and sentencing.

Commissioners approved the purchase of an Elliptical Demolition Dump Body for District 1 from low bidder Southwest Trailers and Equipment LLC for $20,038.

Bid awards for Wrecker Services for the Sheriff’s Office were tabled for one week. Commissioners had previously awarded bids, but concerns by the District Attorney’s Office about the contracts resulted in commissioners rescinding that decision and rebidding the service.
