Legislation would prevent youth access to e-cigarettes

Oklahoma Sen. Frank Simpson and Rep. Pat Ownbey will file legislation this coming session to prevent youth access to e-cigarettes.

The bill will expand the definition of tobacco products in the Prevention of Youth Access to Tobacco Act to include all nicotine delivery products other than FDA-approved cessation aids.

Oklahoma does not prohibit the sale or restrict the advertising of e-cigarettes and vapor products to youth. However, state statute restricts youth access to and advertising of other tobacco products aimed at youth.

State Health Commissioner Terry Cline requested the bill.

Property auction

Coin collections, precious metal, collectible cards and class rings are some of the items from more than 700 abandoned safe deposit boxes scheduled for auction next week, State Treasurer Ken Miller said. The auction will start at 9 a.m. Dec. 18 at Dakil Auctioneers, 200 N.W. 114th St., Oklahoma City. Registration and inspection are from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The money raised from the auction will be held in trust for the owners.

Photos of all items to be auctioned can be viewed at dakil.com.

Sheltering schools

During the Board of Education meeting at Westmoore High School on Monday, Shelter Oklahoma Schools donated $500,000 to Moore Public Schools to assist the district to build shelters.

State Reps. Mark McBride and Jon Echols, creators of the nonprofit entity focused on raising private funds for school storm shelter construction, were on hand to provide the donation.

To date, the program has raised more than $2 million in donations, which will go out to various schools around the state that have applied for funding.
