Sunny skies expected to return this week

NORMAN — The Norman area saw about 0.4 inches of rain on Saturday but it isn’t expected to continue through the rest of the week said Forrest Mitchell, Observations Program Leader at the National Weather Service.

“After (Saturday night’s) rainfall, it should stay sunny and dry through the rest of the work week,” Mitchell said.

In the past 60 days, Norman has seen almost six inches, three of those inches are from the past 30 days. The estimated annual rainfall total is about 20 inches. Rainfall for the month is about 0.04 inches.

Drought conditions continue across the state with parts of Cleveland County under severe and extreme drought conditions according to the latest U.S. Drought Monitor map. Extreme drought is the second-worst drought category and severe is just below it.

According to the Oklahoma Climatological Survey, the statewide average rainfall deficit for May through September is more than eight inches and ranked as one of the five driest stretches on record, dating back to 1895. However, the last week in September did provide some drought relief for the state.

The Oklahoma Climatological Survey with have weather results for October at the end of the month. For more information visit http://climate.ok.gov/
