Snow falls in May

OKLAHOMA CITY — The green lawn around Linda Blackwood’s Adair County house was white Friday morning after an unusual late-season snowfall swept across northeastern Oklahoma.

“When I got up this morning at 4:30, it was all covered,” said Blackwood, an employee at Westville Public School. “At least an inch at my house.”

At Okie Joe’s BBQ Restaurant in nearby Stilwell, Joe Fletcher was preparing for the lunchtime crowd as a light coating of snow remained.

“Not much, just a little bit. It’s still on the cars,” Fletcher said. He said the rare May snowfall should not affect his business, but the near-freezing temperatures with it might keep customers away.

The National Weather Service in Tulsa said more than an inch of snow fell in parts of northeastern Oklahoma during the early-morning hours before pushing into Arkansas Friday morning. It’s the latest snow has fallen in Oklahoma, the last time being April 18, 1953, in Tulsa.

“It’s very unusual to have snow this late in the season,” said Amy Jankowski, a weather service meteorologist.
