NORMAN — Kalin Ross Despain, son of Matt and Carla “Tuzie” Despain, of Norman, was awarded as Eagle Scout, Boy Scouting’s highest rank, on Sunday.
Despain, 18, is a member of Venture Crew 2528, sponsored by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
He began his scouting with Cub Scout Pack 528 (achieving the Arrow of Light award), then a member of Scout Troop 528 and then Venture Crew 2528.
In Boy Scouting and Venturing, Despain had various leadership positions, including patrol leader, senior patrol leader and Venture Crew president.
He earned 31 merit badges and the On My Honor, 50-mile, snorkeling and Polar Bear awards. He also attended Slippery Falls and Diamond H scout ranches, Camp Tom Hale and Camp Flaming Arrow.
Despain has more than 100 camp nights. His favorite merit badges include Signaling (a Centennial merit badge offered only in 2010) and Climbing.
For his Eagle Scout Service project, Despain planned and supervised the expansion and improvement of the outdoor classroom at Monroe Elementary with nearly $5,000 in donated materials and more than 500 man-hours.
The project included a new wood deck, 10 benches, six large cedar planter boxes, stone steps, a trail, planting trees, landscaping and refurbishing the pond.
Despain will graduate in May from Norman High School, where he has been active in the music program, earning All State Jazz Band honors.
He also will graduate from the LDS Seminary religious education program. This fall he will attend the University of Oklahoma.
