Norman Children’s Chorus to host workshop

NORMAN — Norman Children’s Chorus will host Spring Sing, an all-day children’s music workshop ending in a public concert Saturday at the Nancy O’Brian Center for the Performing Arts, 1809 N. Stubbeman Ave.

Dr. Susan Brumfield, Texas Tech University professor of music education, is the day’s guest conductor. The chorus will learn music on site, including two of Brumfield’s arrangements “Seagull, Seagull” and “Old Dan Tucker.”

Brumfield has a doctorate in music education from the University of Oklahoma. She is known throughout the United States and Europe as a clinician, consultant, author, composer, arranger and conductor of children’s choirs and is an internationally recognized Kodaly educator.

Singers in grades third through seventh are invited to participate in the daylong workshop. Anyone interested can call Scott Filleman at 434-1937 or email scott@can.org. Cost is $10 per child.

Music teacher guests on site will spend the day watching rehearsals and participating in a one-hour workshop with Brumfield, a roundtable lunch with Brumfield while NCC parents supervise students and a reading session with NCC Artistic Director Sandy Knudson.

The public concert is at 3:30 p.m. at the Nancy O’Brian Center for the Performing Arts. Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for students and free for children under 12. Tickets can be purchased at the door.

“It’ll be a great concert and gives (the audience) a chance to see a composer in action with her own pieces and with our students,” Knudson said.

NCC’s free spring concert will be 2 p.m. April 5 at the University of Oklahoma’s Catlett Music Center.

NCC were featured as one of three elementary honor groups at the Oklahoma Music Educators Association convention in January.
