Twenty contestants will try to tickle funny bones in 3rd annual Othello’s Comedy Classic

NORMAN — Those adept at tickling funny bones are gathering to compete during the third annual Othello’s Comedy Classic at 9 p.m. Friday at Othello’s, 434 Buchanan Ave. The event is free and open to the public.

Twenty comedians will compete during the event, Othello’s co-owner Jennifer Weiss said. Competitors were selected during four qualifying open mic nights hosted in February, with five comedians selected at each weekly competition.

“I think it is important to create more opportunities for the comedians to get a chance to show their talent to the community, and a contest really draws a lot of attention,” Weiss said. “We want to help them get themselves out there and create a venue they feel comfortable performing at.”

This year’s guest judge is Owen Pickard from KSBI and Jake FM, with Zach Smith, the 2013 Comedy Classic winner, as the host.

The winner of the contest will receive $150 cash, a spot in the Norman Music Festival and a 10-12 minute spot in the Dallas Comedy Festival during the 7 p.m. March 19 show.

Weiss said they are excited to add the Dallas Comedy Festival performance as a part of the prize package for first place.

“This could allow someone to really get a jump start on their career,” she said. “If we are able to continue working with the Dallas Comedy Festival in the future, we could create a lot of great opportunities for some of our local comedians.”
