Suspect in infant’s death arrested

NORMAN — A Norman man charged with the murder of an infant was arrested in Comanche County and booked Monday into Cleveland County Jail.

Treviance Markese Walker, 22, was booked into jail around 4 p.m. for first-degree murder after deputies picked him up in Comanche County and transported him to Cleveland County Jail, said Meghan McCormick, Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office public information officer.

According to an arrested warrant affidavit filed Friday with the criminal miscellaneous charge, Walker initially denied having any physical contact with the nearly 6-month-old child while the child was with Walker on Dec. 7.

Police were responding to a report of an unresponsive child Dec. 7 when they found the infant with trauma to his face and head, the arrest warrant said. The child was transported to Norman Regional Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

When Walker was interviewed again on Dec. 11 by a Norman police detective at Walker’s residence, Walker admitted he initially lied about his contact with the child when the child was left alone with him, the warrant said.

Norman Police Capt. Tom Easley said the detective probably could have arrested Walker then based on probable cause, but the police department tends to err on the side of caution when handling serious crimes.

“We like to have a criminal charge filed before we have an arrest warrant,” Easley said. “In this case, we had information he was in the process of trying to flee or fleeing, so he was arrested before the charge was formally filed.”
