Unfinished business for Sooners

KANSAS CITY — Be it the Super Bowl, a huge college football game or the women’s NCAA Tournament, coaches are apt to call such a journey a “business trip.”

The Oklahoma women might be altering the term slightly. The Sooners, who meet Notre Dame at Sprint Center at 6:34 p.m. today, may be on an unfinished business trip.

Two wins from the Final Four, the Sooners are back in Kansas City exactly two weeks after falling to Texas A&M at Municipal Auditorium in the Big 12 tournament final.

“I think our kids feel comfortable here in Kansas City,” OU coach Sherri Coale said during her pregame press conference Saturday. “I think we feel like we left some business unfinished in the Big 12 tournament.”

Predictably, Coale didn’t reference any unfinished business when it came to the Irish or Nebraska, teams the Sooners could play Tuesday should they win tonight. Coaches almost never publicly claim revenge as a motive. Still, Coale could have.

Notre Dame topped OU 81-71 way back on Nov. 28, only six games into the season, at the Paradise Jam in the U.S. Virgin Islands. It was also two years ago the Irish knocked the Sooners out of the NCAA Tournament in a second-round game at West Lafayette, Ind.

As for Nebraska, the top seed in the Kansas City Regional, which meets Kentucky after the Sooners and Irish tangle, the Huskers beat the Sooners 80-64 Feb. 24 at Lloyd Noble Center.

The Irish are ranked No. 7 and are the No. 2 seed in Kansas City. The Sooners are ranked No. 12 and seeded No. 3.

Tonight’s game will be broadcast on ESPN2 (Cox 28).
