NORMAN — The last formal adoption event before construction begins at the Norman Animal Welfare Center is from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
Jeff Bloomgarden, Friends of the Animals of Norman member, said construction is set to begin Monday.
“The pressure will be on continuously to get these animals either adopted or into rescues,” Bloomgarden said.
At this time, he said it doesn’t look like they will have to euthanize any animals, but there will be 20 fewer kennels to keep animals in once construction begins.
While construction is ongoing, Bloomgarden said they will try to continue to be open on Saturdays with the help of FAN volunteers so people can continue to adopt.
The welfare center will have regular operating hours during the week, as well.
“We’ll keep functioning, it’ll just be a smaller space,” Bloomgarden said.
They are discussing the possibilities of a foster program, he said, but no decisions have been made at this point.
The cost of adoption for cats and dogs is $60 and must be paid in cash. All animals have been spayed or neutered, microchipped and are up to date on shots.
