Okla. House panel approves $40M Indian museum plan

OKLAHOMA CITY — A plan to dip into the state’s Unclaimed Property Fund and spend $40 million to complete the American Indian Cultural Center & Museum has been approved by an Oklahoma House committee, but whether it will be brought to a vote on the House floor remains uncertain.

The House Appropriation and Budget Committee vote 16-10 for the measure Wednesday despite some lawmaker concerns that completing the unfinished museum isn’t a priority.

The plan would use $40 million to match another $40 million in pledges from Oklahoma City, each of the state’s 39 federally recognized tribes and private donors.

Republican House Speaker Jeff Hickman of Fairview has said he wants 51 of the 72 House Republicans to support the plan before it’s scheduled for a vote.
