NORMAN — The Pioneer Library System’s seventh Big Read kickoff will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today in Beaird Lounge at the Oklahoma Memorial Union.

The Big Read is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest, designed to give readers an opportunity to read and discuss a single book within their community and to encourage reading.

This year, the Big Read is focused around the novel “Old School” by Tobias Wolff, which looks at the relationships and challenges of a group of teens at a boarding school in the northeastern United States in the early 1960s.

Those attending the kickoff event will have free parking available in three lots on the University of Oklahoma campus.

Lots directly to the east and south of Sarkey’s Energy Center, 100 E. Boyd St., and a lot southwest of Sarkey’s Energy Center and east of the campus power plant will be designated as free parking for attendees.

The lots can most easily be accessed south of Boyd Street off Trout Avenue or University Place.

Anyone attending the event, which is free to the public, can meet one of 11 noted Oklahoma authors. Entertainment will include music from the OU student group BYX A Capella and local guitarist Eric Herndon.

The Big Read will wrap up with an appearance by Wolff at 11 a.m. April 25 at the Geiger Center at Oklahoma Baptist University in Shawnee and later at 7 p.m. at the Longfellow Middle School auditorium.
