NORMAN — Norman Regional Health System will offer free paper shredding and recycling today, joining thousands of local organizers hosting recycling events across the country to celebrate America Recycles Day.
This day is the only nationally recognized day dedicated to promoting and celebrating recycling in the United States. Norman Regional employees and community members can bring confidential papers to be shredded on site and later recycled.
Papers can be brought from 8 a.m. to noon today to the shredding truck, located at Norman Regional Hospital, south parking lot (north of Sonic). For employees and community members in Moore and west Norman, locked poly carts will be stationed at Moore Medical Center and the HealthPlex. Absolute Data Shredding has donated shredding services.
A special proclamation signing between NRHS executives, Norman Regional Hospital Authority Board Chair Robin Wiens Campbell and city of Norman representatives will be at 9 a.m. at Norman Regional Hospital and city of Moore representatives at 10:30 a.m. at Moore Medical Center.
The signing will take place by the shredding truck in the south parking lot at Norman Regional Hospital and in the west parking lot by the yellow and green Abitibi recycling bin at Moore Medical Center.
Norman Regional Health System recycles a variety of items, including confidential and non-confidential paper and cardboard, and it partners with a national company to reprocess some single-use medical items. Norman Regional Hospital and the HealthPlex partner with the city of Norman to recycle cardboard. In one month, NRHS saved about 100 trees by recycling cardboard with the city.
All three hospital campuses also have outdoor Abitibi paper recycling bins that are open to the public. Based on the amount of paper collected, Abitibi donates money back to the health system through the Norman Regional Health Foundation.
The national recycling rate is currently at 34 percent. Recycling 75 percent of the nation’s waste would create nearly 1.5 million jobs by 2030, according to a report by the Tellus Institute with Sound Resource Management.
