One statement that Dr. Miller made has stuck with me over the years. He said that it would be a major accomplishment if scientists designed a computer AI system that could match the intelligence of a cockroach. But, alas, that goal has not been achieved. He also said that he didn’t know if that goal could even be achieved during his lifetime, and he is by no means an old geezer.
This is one reason why we can become so frustrated with our misbehaving computers: we think they should “know” better, when we should keep in mind that they’re not even as smart as bugs. In the overall big picture of modern technology, the human brain is like God, and a computer is like an amoeba. However, God may not find that comparison to be very funny, and it could be an insult to the amoeba.
