NORMAN — Hoping to ease the fears of Norman schoolchildren, Norman Police stepped up their presence in and near schools on Monday.
“Anticipating that parents and guardians might experience some concerns due to recent events, we thought it appropriate to provide an increased police presence at all schools this morning,” Norman Police Capt. Tom Easley said. “We did not receive any threats or specific requests from the public or private schools, although we have a long history of close relations and an excellent partnership with all schools in the community.”
Easley said Monday’s efforts were organized by Capt. Blake Green and included officers from various assignments and shifts throughout the entire department.
“Each received an assignment, and, to the best of our knowledge, we had an officer at all schools from about 7:30 to 9:30 this morning,” Easley said Monday.
Judging my the response the officers received, parents were grateful.
“Officers at the schools reported receiving numerous expression of appreciation for our presence,” Easley said. “We have also received several emails from parents thanking us for our efforts.
“I think, by and large, we achieved our goal,” he said. Easley shared a positive Facebook post left on the department’s page.
Here is the post as provided by Easley:
“As a mother, after Friday’s tragedy, I was very nervous taking my little one to school this morning, the thought of all of it just breaks my heart.
“But when I pulled in this morning and took my child in and seen not 1 but 2 police cars outside and a policeman inside, alot of that nervousness eased up.
“I just wanted to take the time to say thank you, I believe you all have heard the cries of every mother in the town, you guys and girls, already go above and beyond to make sure we are safe, and I feel much better knowing that you are all looking out for our children while we are not abl to.
“Again Thank you for ALL that you do!”
