Only three inspecting state’s dentists

By Justin Juozapavicius and Sean Murphy

TULSA — Following allegations that a Tulsa-area oral surgeon exposed at least 7,000 patients to hepatitis, or the virus that causes AIDS, the head of the Oklahoma Dentistry Board says the agency has just three inspectors to watch over the state’s 2,200 dentists.

Susan Rogers also told The Associated Press that a state law prohibits surprise inspections of dental offices and that dentists are depended upon to police themselves.

Rogers wants more investigators and says she will recommend regular inspections of dental facilities.

Her comments come after Dr. W. Scott Harrington allegedly exposed patients to the diseases. The patients have been urged to be tested and about 2,000 have done so.
