Odom addresses county Democrats

NORMAN — Ben Odom will speak at the Tyner Cornbread and Beans luncheon Friday.

Odom, 53, is a veteran Democratic Party leader and former nominee for U.S. Congress. He recently served as the state vice chair for the party in the 2006 election cycle and also was active on the Democratic National Committee, where he was a leading voice in the rural

He was named to the National Platform Committee for the 2000 election, where he worked on the National Security plank. Odom was the Democratic nominee for U.S. Congress for the Fourth District in 1998 and was again a candidate and made the run-off for the party nomination for the heavily redistricted Fourth District in 2002.

He is a former statewide campaign manager for Jim Boren for U.S. Senate and served as legal counsel for the Clinton-Gore campaigns in Oklahoma. He is a past district and county chair and currently is the senior partner in the Norman law firm of Odom, Sparks and Jones.

The luncheon will be at Catering Creations, 3750 W. Main St. The luncheon is sponsored by the Cleveland County Democratic Party.

Lunch begins at 11:15 a.m. with the speaker beginning about noon. Guests can select lunch from Catering Creations’ mini-buffet. The meeting is open to the public.

County Democrats Held Successful Convention: Suzette McDowell, of Norman, was re-elected as chair of the Cleveland County Democratic Party at its county convention Saturday.

Democratic precinct officers from across the county gathered at the J.D. McCarty Center to elect party leadership and delegates to the district and state Democratic conventions and hear a legislative update from Rep. Emily Virgin.

Troy Green, of Oklahoma City, was elected as vice chair and Cassi Peters was elected as secretary. Sixty delegates were in attendance. Forty-three delegates were chosen by the body to represent Cleveland County at the district and state levels.

The Congressional District 4 Convention will be May 4 in Lawton, and the State Democratic Party Convention will be May 18 in Oklahoma City.
