NORMAN — Seventeen local high school students were recently accepted to attend the annual Rotary Youth Leadership Awards summer conference today through June 21 in the Arbuckle Mountains in southern Oklahoma.

The students join dozens of other youths from across southwestern and central Oklahoma. Each is sponsored by local Rotary Clubs.

The students are accepted by sending in applications including a full resume. A Rotary committee chooses conference participants. While going through applications the committee is looking for leadership, determination and focus.

“The accepted students usually have great leadership qualities, and fantastic overall school performance,” said Hans Wachter, a member of the Norman Rotary Club.

“The juniors that attend will have many challenging interactions, and will have the chance to learn from many new things and apply that to becoming a better leader. We hope this will help them set goals for the future, and gain new relationships with each other,” Wachter said.

The Rotary districts and the different Rotary Clubs pay the camp’s fees by collecting donations to fund this event.
