NORMAN — A Moore man was charged Tuesday in Cleveland County District Court after he led police on a pursuit Friday and was caught with nearly $50,000 in cash and marijuana he threw out the window during the chase.
Clovis Kim Cates, 32, was charged with unlawful possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, acquiring proceeds from drug activity, endangering others while eluding or attempting to elude a police officer and driving with a canceled, suspended or revoked license.
Police were notified earlier that day to be on the lookout for Cates and the vehicle he was driving as he had confirmed federal warrants, records show.
A Moore police officer was conducting a traffic stop on the vehicle after Cates protruded over the stop line and into the crosswalk while stopped for a red traffic light. As the officer was waiting for a backing officer to make contact, Cates accelerated and fled from the stop at a high rate of speed, according to the affidavit filed with charges.
During pursuit of the vehicle, police said Cates struck two curbs, causing a tire to deflate, but continued to drive. Police also observed Cates toss three white bags out the passenger window along northbound Interstate 35 service road that were later found to contain nearly $50,000 cash in bindles and a large amount of green, leafy substance believed to be marijuana, the affidavit said.
Records show that police believe Cates had 66.4 grams of marijuana.
Cates’ vehicle became completely disabled at SW 82nd Street and the service road, at which point he was taken into custody. During the search incident to arrest, police found a wrapper containing a rolled cigarette with a green, leafy substance believed to be marijuana in Cates’ pants pocket as well, the affidavit said.
According to an enhancement page filed with the charges, Cates has previously been convicted of or pled guilty to drug-related charges in Oklahoma County. In June 2009, the charges included possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, possession of drug proceeds and possession of a weapon while committing a felony.
In February 2007, he was convicted or pled guilty to possession of a controlled dangerous substance.
