CCSO IDs fatally shot man

NORMAN — Cleveland County sheriff’s investigators have identified a man who died following a deputy-involved shooting Saturday morning in Norman.

Nicholas Popplewell, 27, of Norman, was pronounced dead after he was transported by ambulance to a Norman hospital.

According to a preliminary investigation, about 8:45 a.m. Saturday, a deputy stopped a GMC sport utility vehicle for a traffic violation near the intersection of 24th Avenue SW and Boyd Street in Norman. The driver identified as Christopher Mormann, 36, and Popplewell, were the only occupants inside the SUV. Soon after, a K-9 arrived at the traffic stop to assist.

During the traffic stop, the driver advised the deputy there was a gun and drugs in the vehicle which the K-9 alerted to shortly after the admission. While beginning a search of the vehicle, Popplewell ran to the K-9 deputy’s patrol car and got inside the vehicle.

One deputy ran after Popplewell and attempted to extract him from the patrol vehicle. Popplewell managed to put the vehicle in drive and drag the deputy a short distance.

The other deputy opened fire and struck Popplewell.

Detectives have confirmed that Popplewell had an outstanding felony warrant out of McClain County for first-degree robbery and aggravated assault and battery.

Mormann was booked into the Cleveland County Detention Center on complaints of possession of marijuana and possession of paraphernalia. He bonded out of jail Saturday afternoon.

Names of the deputies involved in the incident will be released at a later time. Both deputies have been placed on routine paid administrative leave.

Detectives continue to investigate the incident.
