Creating a tornado-safe home

NORMAN — Builders at Home Creations believe stronger homes are safer homes. The Cleveland County-based company builds three tornado safety features into all homes as standard practice.

Since 1999, Home Creations has added three tornado safety features in all homes it builds. This structural integrity makes the homes safer and gives homeowners peace of mind.

Tornado safe features include:

Anchor bolts — The name says it all Anchor bolts, also called J-bolts due to their shape, anchor the bottom plate of a home to the stem wall. The benefit comes from sinking them eight inches into the concrete of the stem wall, and the J shape locks them in place.

Torndo Straps — Some parts of the country call them hurricane straps, but the benefit is the same anywhere. Tornado straps anchor the top plate of the home to the rafters, keeping the roof secure in high wind.

OSB Sheathing — OSB stands for Oriented Strand Board, a super-strong sheathing that gets its strength from alternating layers of wood. Home Creations puts OSB rather than flimsy foam board around the entire perimeter of its homes.

These features makes a home sturdier, safer and more energy efficient, Home Creations builders say.

In layman’s terms, OSB sheathing is a building product made by blending wood strands with thermal-set, waterproof adhesives.

The treated strands are arranged in cross-directional layers and pressed together under heat and extreme pressure.

What results is a strong and durable dense panel. This is considered a green building product because it is made of natural renewable wood resources. OSB sheathing improves the integrity of the structure of a home and protects the structure from the wear and tear of Oklahoma’s harsh weather conditions.

As a building material, OSB sheathing dos not warp, split or delaminate as easily as plywood. Consumers can count on consistent quality without core voids and knots. OSB sheathing is uniform, strong, dense and easy to work with.

OSB is also environmentally friendly, using wood from small, fast-growing trees. That means less waste and better use of resources
