Tornado flag returns home

MOORE — Soon the American flag will fly at Moore Medical Center again. The flag has not been seen flying over MMC since May 20, 2013, when an EF-5 destroyed the hospital.

On Monday, the Veterans of Foreign Wars will return the flag that flew at the building during the tornado as well as a new American flag which will be raised at MMC for the first time in almost a year.

An American flag flew at MMC every day since the opening of the facility in 2005 until May 20 last year. Following the tornado, an alert was issued to the City of Moore for the flag recovery. Several days later, a call was received that a resident, living across the highway from the hospital, discovered the flag while working on debris removal from the tornado. Having seen the flag flying prominently over the medical center’s campus for many years, he knew exactly where the flag had come from. The flag was recovered, verified and taken for preservation.

A Flag Presentation Ceremony will be 10 a.m. at the Norman Regional Health System’s temporary Emergency Services building, 700 S. Telephone Road.
