NORMAN — More than 400 volunteers will pick up hammers, rakes and paint brushes Friday for the United Way of Norman’s 20th annual Day of Caring. It’s the largest group of volunteers ever for the event.
Workers from 35 different companies and organizations will spend the day completing service projects at 27 nonprofit agencies around Norman. Projects range from yard work to painting to minor construction.
Before heading out to their work sites, volunteers will start the day with an 8 a.m. kickoff event at Journey Church. Breakfast will be provided by Sonic and McDonald’s. Starbucks is providing coffee. Hiland Dairy is providing juice and milk.
University of Oklahoma men’s basketball coach Lon Kruger will join the kickoff speakers, which include United Way campaign chairs James Chappel and John Koons. They plan to announce the total amount of money raised by this year’s Pacesetters and officially kick off the community phase of the 2013 United Way Campaign.
Volunteers then will go to their work sites. Lunches provided by the NCED Conference Center will be delivered to the work sites by Bob Usry & Sons.
