Gas leak forces evacuation

NORMAN — Four businesses near 24th Avenue NW and West Main Street were evacuated about by local authorities about 6:30 p.m. Friday because of a natural gas leak, according to Norman Police Department authorities.

Police closed 24th Avenue NW north of West Main Street to southbound traffic, and detoured traffic off onto either Hemphill or Broadway to the west.

Travel to the north from Main and 24th was discouraged. By 9 p.m., traffic was allowed to return to normal, police said.

Oklahoma Natural Gas was called to the scene to repair the gas leak.

Norman Fire Department Deputy Fire Chief Jim Bailey said about 250 people were evacuated from the premises.
